After nearly a full year on the market, Square Enix has finally confirmed it will be patching PS4 remaster Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition. The game has lied dormant since release in April 2022, with the base version featuring frame rate issues and input delay. These problems will now be addressed in an update said to house "a wide range of changes".
A post on the Square Enix Twitter account says there'll be "frame rate improvements, changes to the growth system for Pip, and fixes for other bugs". It then thanks the fans for their "thoughts and feedback" on the PS4 remaster.
These are all flaws we highlighted in our Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition PS4 review. While still calling it a "charming JRPG", we said it was a "dreadfully poor remaster" and handed it a 4/10 rating. Now Square Enix has revealed an update is finally on the way, it may be a version worth playing come the end of February. A Digital Foundry deep dive even found the PS4 version to run worse than what's available on PS1.

Better late than never i suppose
Square Enix is my favourite 3P studio. But their customer care is shocking right now.
This issue is just one of a growing list of many. They have screwed over players on every platform and within each of their fanbases with their incompetence. And they don’t seem to be getting better.
At least they are fixing this problem though.
It took Square Enix 3 years + to fix Nier Automata on PC officially. This is a record for Square 🤣
I never played this back in the day, so this would have been the perfect opportunity to remedy that. Obviously I skipped this release because it was so poor, but if this patch truly fixes at least most of the problems, then I may finally play it. We'll see, but too bad it never got a physical release outside of Asia as it would have probably been pretty cheap by now since it was such a poor release.
Back to the Wishlist with it
u should give nioh and ds3 also a 4/10 for having framerate issues
@arra1213 Oh, did they run worse than their PS1 equivalents? OH WAIT THERE WERENT ANY.
@dskatter 4fps 😄
I honestly didn't find anything overtly bad about the remaster. It ran like the original, which for modern sensibilities may not have been the greatest experience, but as someone who played the PS1 original half a dozen times, made little impact on me personally.
Could it have been improved? Could it run better? Could they have made quality of life changes here and there?
Yes, yes, and yes. But I don't think the game NEEDED these to be enjoyable today.
@KilloWertz Maybe now they release a fixed physical edition...
This should have happened way earlier. But better late then never. At least they are fixing it. (Or trying. We'll see)
I'm not sure if this is filed under "I don't understand the modern games industry" or "I don't understand Squeenix." Maybe that's asking the same question twice.
I'm very glad they're fixing it, but the industry seems to miss no opportunity, and square in particular, to tell us we should absolutely positively never, ever buy games during launch period, because they won't even work right until about the time they're half price and forgotten. You would think they might have incentive to make waiting seem like a losing strategy than a winning one.
I am so happy they didn't just drop it.
I hope these fixes are for all versions cause i ended up getting it on the switch, which was the better version at the time.
This gives me hope that maybe the series won't be forgotten.
It's so disheartening to see squeenix put out trash like forspoken when they could make a new Chrono game instead to critical acclaim and great sales given the legendary cult status. Would've been way less risky.
I would be interested if it had a more accurate translation but I doubt that's in the cards.
Let's give SE some slack, of course it's not cool if something releases in an unoptimized state, but generally they just had a slate of mostly stellar releases last year (I can not speak for the pc versions, though I heard the fan base fixed chrono cross after release).
Do they plan on remaking the game? Otherwise no amount of patches will fix what I have an issue with (graphics wise).
